Each year, there’s a new trending color for the upcoming months. For 2017, the color is nature-inspired. It’s PANTONE Greenery, which evokes a sense of reconnection and growth. Pantone is a universal color system that forecasters use to show the exact color that has been forecasted. Paint companies create the forecasted colors to actually put them on the walls. If you want the exact PANTONE Greenery color, be sure to also note the number that goes with it: 15-0343.

Factors That Influence Colors

Color is not a designer’s whim. Color trends come from where we are, where we want to go, and how people are feeling or not feeling. Several factors contribute to the mood of color:

  • Events—When major events are forecasted, such as the Presidential election, the Olympics, and, yes, even the Star Wars movie, softer and safe colors are what we are drawn to.
  • Economy—When the economy is strong, popular color gets rich, deep, and vibrant. When it is weak, we see trends toward light colors and soft/safe colors.
  • War—When the country is under attack, color leaves our homes and becomes safe, soft, and practically nonexistent. Taupe, grays, and whites are war colors.
