Choosing the Right Window Treatment

Alustra® Pirouette® Window Shadings

At Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we know that many people can feel overwhelmed when they begin their search for new window fashions. And we totally get it. But it’s actually very easy to narrow down the options. Speak with one of our representatives, or read on to learn more.

To Start

You have so many choices today when it comes to window coverings, from draperies to shutters and everything else in between. So it helps to first outline your goals. Are you looking for more privacy? Do you want to maintain your view? Do you have an issue with damaging UV rays? Are you looking to enhance your décor? Do you find that your room is too cold in the winter and too warm in the summer so some insulation at the window would be good?

Window Type

Windows come in all sizes, from standard to specialty shapes. For large expanses of glass (such as walls of window or sliding or patio doors), you might want to have vertically oriented treatments. For specialty shapes, look toward honeycomb shades, wood blinds, or shutters.

Controlling Light

With blinds and shutters, you control the light coming by rotating them open or closed. With shades, you either open or close them to impact the light. That said, one great feature for a shade that adds more functionality is called top-down/bottom-up operation, which allows you to adjust light from the top or bottom or both.

Enhancing Décor

Custom draperies and top treatments allow you bring your own personal style to a room. Available in thousands of fabrics, colors, textures, and opacities, draperies bring your decorating style to life. They can be used along or combined with blinds or shades. Keep in mind the following: If you want to just add softness or color to the room, you may want to consider stationary drapery panels instead of full draperies. If you need total blackout, consider adding a blackout lining or a shade. To be able to see out, look for sheer or semi-opaque fabrics. If you already have window coverings, you could consider adding a valance or a cornice to add visual interest in the room.
