If you’re moving into a new home, merging two homes together for the first time, or just plain bored with your current look, you might be trying to decide on a new style. At Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we know how overwhelming that type of change can be. Sometimes it’s easier to start by understand types of styles. Read on to learn about contemporary style and how you can incorporate it into your home.
Many people confuse contemporary with modern design (the words are actually synonyms), but they’re actually two distinct styles. Contemporary design is notable for currently trending pieces and styles. Modern, on the other hand, is rooted the mid-1900s. Contemporary style offers more softening to the surroundings; you’ll see rounded, clean lines and a base of neutral colors (with occasional pops of accent color). It is marked by simplicity and sophistication, updated materials, and on-trend shapes and textures.
Bring Contemporary Design to Your Home
You can go all in or just take introducing the style in steps. Here are some easy ways to make your home more contemporary:
- Declutter. Contemporary design is about uncluttered spaces. If you’ve got every piece of décor you own on display, it might be too much.
- Add neutral colors. Think beige, gray, white, and cream. Once you’ve got neutrals as your base, you can add pops of color in your accessories, artwork, or window fashions.
- Bring on some texture. Think metal, stone, glass, and textiles. Use textured fabrics in neutral or plain colors for accent pillows or rugs. Houseplants are good too—they’re eco-friendly and can soften a space by adding unique shapes and gentle greens. Consider window treatments that feature texture, such as Provenance® Woven Woods, which are made from natural reeds, woods, grass, and bamboo.
- Don’t forget the lighting. Light and shadow work together in contemporary spaces to add depth and create visual interest. Be sure to have different kinds of light—from above as well as from below—to create the right lines in the room. And let natural light do some work too, by getting the right window treatment to control the light the way you want.
