In bedrooms and media rooms in particular, many people look to achieve as close to room-darkening as they can—to get a good night’s sleep or to watch movies or TV without glare. Hunter Douglas, the leader in the window treatment industry, has created numerous solutions. At Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we’ll be happy to help you determine what works best for your situation. Read on for some ideas!
Shade For Blocking Light
Obviously, any treatment that’s over a window will have some level of light-blocking ability. However, some treatments do it better than others, often because of fabric type and color. Sheer fabrics filter light, semi-opaque offer some privacy protection and some filtering, and opaques block the most light. But the treatment itself isn’t all that’s stopping light from entering—there are ways light can enter from the sides of the treatment or through rout holes or other areas. You can strategically address some of these issues. For example, you can mount the treatment outside of the window frame instead of inside it or add drapery or side panels. You can also add a room-darkening liner, available on most Hunter Douglas shades; the liner can be sewn onto the shade or you can have the option of letting it operate independently. Hunter Douglas has also designed some ways to reduce gaps, such as the Duette® LightLock™ system, which absorbs light and prevents it from entering the room.
Room-Darkening Options Using Custom Window Shades
Choose solid shades for the best in room-darkening. For example, Vignette® Modern Roman Shades offer luxurious folds that help reduce incoming light, and roller shades are also good, especially if you choose a specific room-darkening fabric. Cellular shades, like Duette® Honeycomb Shades, work well for room-darkening, and they give you the added benefit of insulating the window, helping to keep your energy costs down, even when it’s very hot outside.
