Window Treatment Safety

Nantucket™ Window Shadings

If you have young kids or pets, odds are you know that they can frequently find the unsafe objects in your home, like sharp knives, electrical outlets or plugs, and cleaning products. Which is why you’ve likely done some work to keep those things out of reach so your child or pet is out of harm’s way. In a similar way, your window fashions should have some safety efforts in place, which is why, at Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we’re committed to helping our customers determine whether their window coverings are hazardous and helping them find ways to mitigate any dangers. Read on to learn about some options!

Avoid Dangling Cords From Window Treatments

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in children’s homes. If cords are reachable by and accessible to infants and toddlers, they can pose strangulation dangers, which can result in brain damage or death. However, new treatments from Hunter Douglas offer a variety of pet- and child-safe operating systems. You can choose the cordless lift system, which is a spring-assisted lift system that’s hidden in the treatment’s headrail. Or go with SimpleLift™, which lets you raise and lower the treatment with the simple touch of a button on the bottom rail. UltraGlide® lets you maneuver your treatment with a single retractable cord or wand. PowerView® Automation is a fully programmable motorized system that lets you adjust your window treatments based on programming or at any time, even if you’re not at home. These are just a few of what’s available on new treatments; you can find the system you like that can protect your loved ones too.

Other Options

New treatments might not be on your list right now, and that’s OK because you can still take other precautions. To reduce the risks from any dangling cords that might be on your current treatments, simply shorten the cords or tuck them up and out of reach of your child. Be sure to keep cribs and beds away from corded treatments (ideally on the other side of the room if possible). If you want to get rid of the cords entirely, order a free retrofit kit from the Window Covering Safety Council at https://windowcoverings.org/retrofit-your-windows/. This kit can help you make your cords as safe as possible for everyone in your home.
