Selecting Vinyl or Linoleum Flooring
Vinyl and Linoleum Offers New Styles
Resilient flooring has been around for a long time. The oldest type of resilient, linoleum, has been in existence for over 150 years! If you haven’t seen the new styles and colors in resilient then you may be in for a surprise!
The name resilient is given to products like linoleum, vinyl, rubber and similar products because of the flooring’s solid nature and its ability to flex or “give” a little when walked on. What we used to call sheet vinyl now comes in interesting designs and 12-foot widths which eliminates the seams.
Resilient can now deliver the look of upscale ceramic, wood and intricate designs in stone and marble. You can get a full range of finishes and looks which are embossed and printed with such precision that they look and feel like the materials whose images they portray!
For protection, resilient flooring are made with urethane including aluminum oxide particles which are the same tough topcoat used in wear layers for woods and laminate in recent years. This makes these new resilient floors easy to clean up and resist scratching.
What is Luxury Vinyl Tile?
Luxury vinyl tile “LVT” is at the high end of resilient flooring. It has high performance and high fashion. New designs in luxury tile include everything from contemporary colors, vivid brights, pearlized finishes and abstracts with soft patterns. Other looks are exotic and distressed woods, colored concretes and fossilized stone plus metallics, rich colors and wide planks!
Luxury vinyl tile can perform better than wood and stone! Luxury tile never needs refinishing, will not warp due to excessive water, resists scratches, remains quieter to walk on and is warm to the touch.
Where to Use Resilient?
Resilient can be installed just about anywhere, but especially in wet areas, children’s or handicapped rooms where an easy-to-walk-on surface is must. Also in niche areas like an entry and in areas where you don’t want seams and want an easy-to-clean floor.
Because resilient is so easy to keep clean it’s hygienic! There are no places for dirt, grime or germs to hide and it’s skid resistant.
Linoleum is a Very Green Choice
Linoleum is made from natural materials: linseed oil, resins, recycled wood flour, cork dust, limestone, mineral pigments and mounted on jute backing. It’s naturally anti-bacterial and biodegradable. So, it’s perfect for a household with kids and pets.
Sheet linoleum is sold in two-meter (or 6’ 7”) widths and several thicknesses. Linoleum can be installed in most any room in the home, though it’s most popular in non-residential settings. Linoleum flooring is not meant for stairs or bathrooms.
One of linoleum’s most distinctive qualities is that the entire thickness is all the same. Which if it does get scratched, the color and pattern remain the same, which makes it more forgiving for scuffs and dropped objects on the floor.
