Get Energy Help From Your Window Treatments
An untreated window doesn’t offer much insulation from the outside air, particularly if it’s a south-facing window that gets a lot of direct sunlight. Adding any window treatment will help improve the energy efficiency of a room; certain window treatments will do it even more. At Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we know that many of our customers like to save money in any way they can—and one great way is by helping to cut heating and cooling costs. Read on to learn which window fashions will be the best at making your energy bills smaller.
Ways to Improve a Covering’s Energy Efficiency
No matter your window treatment, you can still get some help with saving energy if you make the best use of it. On winter days, when your window can get direct sunlight, keep your treatments open so that your room can benefit from the free solar heat, which will warm your room. On cloudy days, close the treatment to insulate the room and keep warm air in. And at night, don’t lose the warm air to the cold air outside—keep your treatment closed. In the summer, keep your treatment closed during the day to reduce solar heat, and at night, keep it closed so the cool air stays in.
Saving at the Window
A pioneer in creating the honeycomb shade, Hunter Douglas is known for its energy-efficient treatments. The Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC) chose Hunter Douglas as the first to receive their verified energy rating and certification for interior window coverings. AERC-certified Hunter Douglas products include:
- Sonnette™ Cellular Roller Shades. The sculptured construction of the Sonnette cellular roller shade has been dubbed “the new shape of light.” These beautiful rolling cells gently diffuse sunlight throughout the room.
- Duette® Honeycomb Shades. Duette Honeycomb shades offer a simple, sleek look for modern spaces, but also work well in traditional settings. The ultimate benefit, of course, is that they almost pay for themselves with the energy savings you’ll enjoy
- Applause® Honeycomb Shades. Unlike some other brands of cellular shades, Applause is created with a double cell, which offers increased insulation over regular single-cell construction.
