Why Earth Tones?

Earth tones add a connection to nature, which creates a sense of balance and calm. They are contemporary and inviting, and they can work in harmony well. Earth tones are most commonly found in living rooms and family rooms, the places where people tend to gather in a home, but they also work well in bedrooms and kitchens.

Adding Earth Tones

The term “earth tones” covers a wide range of colors—just think of everything you see in nature! That’s why finding the right combination for your home might mean a little trial and error. To start, choose a palette you like, and narrow it to colors that will pair well. Think about ivory with terracotta, red brick with ashy gray, or tan with forest green. Then add the hues by thinking about the following approaches:

  • Follow nature. Think about mimicking the outside environment—use muted colors like warm browns (think dirt) with olive (think fall leaves). Colors that are glossy or shiny tend to look unnatural, so avoid them. Be sure that your larger pieces, such as a rug or bedding, are in the muted tones.
  • Use texture. Texture brings out the pop in your earth tones. If you’re using wallpaper, consider a landscape print or something with texture. Add textured décor in things made with burlap, cement, or wood or elements that are woven.
  • Add layers. Layers will make the space feel intentional and will add visual interest. Drape an earth tone throw blanket over your sofa or add drapery or side panels to your current window treatments.

Complementary Window Coverings

Be sure to think about how your main window treatments can complement or add to your new earth tone palette. If you want a natural look, consider Provenance® Woven Wood Shades, which are made from grasses, reeds, woods, or bamboo and which filter light beautifully. Or think about Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which will add a sense of elegance and style. And for that layered look, consider the fabrics and variety in the you’ll get from custom Hunter Douglas drapes, with exclusive Carole Fabrics looks.
