Applause® Honeycomb Shades

Here in Colorado, we get plenty of natural sunlight throughout the year. That’s why, at Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we’re not surprised that many of our customers consider adding a skylight to their homes—after all, why not capitalize on the light that’s all around? But it can be overwhelming to consider how to treat that skylight. That’s where we come in, with plenty of experience and know-how, we can help you figure out the right way to treat your existing or soon-to-be skylight in a way that will enhance your home. Read on for some ideas, and be sure to contact one of our consultants for details about your specific scenario.

Benefits and Drawbacks to Skylights

A skylight can add a great deal to a room. It can create a focal point, bring in lots of natural light, and add dimension to the area. However, the direct overhead sunlight (especially here at a mile high!) can be a bit harsh and create glare in the room throughout the day. Plus, it can invite UV ray damage in the spots where the sun strikes. Finally, skylights can be another way inside air can escape and outside air can leak in, which could increase your energy bill.

Window Treatments for Skylights

With the right window treatment, however, you can enjoy the benefits of your skylight while reducing the drawbacks. For one, choose the right type of light-blocking you need based on the needs of the room—more blocking for a bedroom, for example, but less for a kitchen where you might welcome the additional light. If you’re concerned about energy usage, find a treatment that can help insulate the window, keeping the summertime hot air and wintertime cold air outdoors where it belongs. Get a treatment that’s good for UV ray protection, so you can preserve your flooring and furniture. Finally, think about how you’ll want to operate the treatment—after all, skylights are generally out of easy reach. You’ll want to determine the best way to operate your treatment, whether it’s remotely or with another solution.

Skylight Treatment Options

Hunter Douglas offers some excellent solutions to address the issues outlined above. For example, cellular shades such as Duette® and Applause® Honeycomb Shades can help with energy efficiency. To block UV rays while still getting some light in the room, check out Somner® Custom Vertical Blinds or Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds, which each offer 75% UV ray protection. And for your operating system, you can choose from the Skylift™ or Simplicity™ system (which operate manually) or PowerView® Motorization (which lets you operate your treatment remotely, even if you’re halfway around the world).
