Does your home have unused attic space? Have you ever thought of remodeling it to become something useful? Not all homes have attic space—or even if they do, the space might not be suitable for conversion—but if your home has the space, you could consider transforming it into something you’ll enjoy. At Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we have a few ideas for what you might do with your attic. Read on to learn more!

Attic Makeover Options

Your attic doesn’t have to be just about cobwebs and dust. In fact, with just a little elbow grease, you could transform it into a space you might want to spend a lot of time in (just remember to check out local building codes, get any needed permits, and have an HVAC company ensure that your ductwork is in order). Here are some things to consider for your attic:

  • Make it a remote haven. Have you ever dreamed of a quiet reading nook? Your attic could become that haven! If it has sloped ceilings, use lower furniture and smaller artwork. With a comfy bench, a side table, a few accessories, and a reading lamp, the area could become your stress-free quiet zone.
  • Turn it to a cute rentable space. You could make some extra cash each month by renting the space to vacationers or someone who needs a room for a short while. If it’s big enough, you can turn your attic into a cute studio apartment, with an economy kitchen, a half bath, and a sleeping area.
  • Create a luxury bathroom. Why not create that spa-like retreat of your dreams? Your attic could be the blank slate to work with. Even if you don’t go all-out with luxury, adding an extra bath to your home could increase its overall value.
  • Bring on a dreamy closet. Feel like there’s not enough closet space? Why not create the closet of your dreams right above your head? Paint your attic a clean white, and add a full mirror, a dresser, and a changing stool. Then just arrange your clothes the way you want, and you’ve got your private closet space.

Finish With Window Coverings

Now that the space is getting more directed use, be sure to cover any windows appropriately, being mindful of light control, UV ray protection, energy efficiency, and privacy matters, especially if the attic becomes an apartment, a bathroom, or a dressing room. Because you might want all the insulation you can get, consider treatments specially designed to keep outside air out, such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades, or Solera® Soft Shades. If your attic has a skylight (or if you add one), consider treatments like Somner® Custom Vertical Blinds or Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds. And if you really want to kick your attic look up a notch, think about side panels from the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™.
