Window Treatments for a Scullery

Especially given the strength of the Colorado sun and how much outside air can impact inside air, at Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we advise that it’s a good idea to have some sort of window covering, no matter the room in your home. And the same holds true if you have a scullery with a window. For ideas on how to treat that opening, read below, and be sure to speak with one of our representatives for ideas directly pertaining to your space.

What’s a Scullery?

Although most people associate sculleries with the Victorian age (think shows like Downton Abbey), they’ve been making a comeback in new builds and home remodels. Sculleries are like mini prep kitchens that usually appear to the side of the main kitchen. They typically contain a sink and cabinets, as well as sometimes additional appliances like a smaller fridge or another dishwasher. Sculleries offer a variety of benefits, including extra countertops for food prep, extra storage, a way to hide kitchen mess for dinner parties, and a way to help bring about a pristine kitchen look.

Finding Coverings for Scullery Windows

Although some sculleries don’t have a window at all, the ones that do enjoy the natural light any window brings in. However, that also means that that window should enjoy a treatment, for all the same reasons as you would treat a window anywhere else (particularly when it comes to harmful UV rays and privacy control). Even if the scullery isn’t a place you’ll show many guests, you will want to feel comfortable being in it, so everything from aesthetics to functionality will be important. Here are a few of the goals some of our customers have had for their scullery window treatments:

  • Easy maintenance. For sculleries with high moisture, a good choice would be aluminum or faux wood blinds, such as Hunter Douglas Everwood® Alternative wood Blinds or Modern Precious® Aluminum Blinds. They never go out of style, can be cleaned fairly easily, and are a good value.
  • Modern aesthetics. Roman shades bring a touch of elegance to any space, combining the softness of drapery with crisp, clean folds. Especially in all-white sculleries, Vignette® Modern Roman Shades offer new pizzazz through color, pattern, and texture
  • Energy efficiency. A lot of indoor air can escape through an untreated window, so many customers find insulation a high-value factor. Duette® Honeycomb Shades can trap air at the windows, ensuring that what’s inside stays inside and what’s outside stays out. Plus, they provide excellent light and privacy control, sound absorption, and style.
