Drapes or Curtains?

At Bretz Interiors serving the greater Denver area, we carry the full line of Hunter Douglas window fashions, including products made with hardwood or vinyl and products on the softer side like curtains and drapes. Although some people know they want to go that fabric route, they’re unsure of the differences between the two products. And yet, they are definitely different. Read on to learn more about curtains and drapes and to help determine if one of them is right for your window fashion project.

Differences Between the Two

Even though both drapes and curtains are made with fabric, they are definitely not the same. They offer very different looks, different levels of privacy, and different types of light control. Here are the main differentiators:

  • Fabric. Both the type and length of fabric differ between the styles. Drapes are usually made with thicker fabrics and are frequently lined to block glare and add insulation. Also, because they’re made of thicker fabrics, they tend to look a little more formal. Curtains are usually made from sheer fabrics and tend to let more natural light into the room. Plus, they create a lighter, more casual vibe. Drapes are typically longer—usually floor length or longer—and curtains tend to be cut just at the windowsill or slightly below.
  • Functionality. If you’re looking for greater privacy and light control, select drapes, which block light and absorb sound. If your room calls for more natural light and you’re not worried about privacy, select curtains, which are also more versatile in terms of types of rods they can hang on.
  • Maintenance. Drapery requires professional cleaning, which means a bit more effort than curtains. With curtains, you can frequently simply wash them in a regular washer on a gentle cycle in cool water.

Because they’re more formal and longer, drapes are better for living and bedrooms, while shorter and more casual curtains do well in kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms. No matter your choice, curtains or drapes, we offer a wide array of fabrics and hardware to create your unique look at your window. Be sure to speak with a consultant to see the options today!
