Protect Your Home When You Travel

Summer months are here, and it’s a great time to get out and explore through travel, whether it’s here in Colorado, in another state, or even abroad. Yet when you go, you might leave your home unprotected and available to burglars. At Bretz Interiors here in Lakewood, we have a few tips for how to protect your home while you’re away, which can help reduce your stress when you travel. Read on for more!

Keep It Safe and Secure

After months of planning your destination and itinerary, purchasing any tickets, and reserving places to stay, you’re ready to head out and explore. Now’s the time to secure your home. The obvious choice is a home alarm system, and many people have some great systems and companies. However, if you don’t already have one, it can be a pretty pricey investment. Which is why it’s nice that you have some other options when it comes to securing your home.

Avoid Announcing Your Trip

Social media has changed how people share information, which can be a good thing. But when it comes to any upcoming travel, it’s best to keep mum ahead of your departure and while you’re away. The less people know about it beforehand, the better, because then fewer folk will know that your house is sitting empty.

Use Your Locks

In addition to locking all external doors, be sure that your windows are all firmly latched. And if you have a garage door opener, think about disconnecting while you’re gone.

Lean on a Friend

Ask a friend to keep tabs on your place while you’re gone. It’s best if they can check in at least every couple of days—both to guard against intruders as well as to monitor any in-house trouble, such as frozen pipes in the winter. Ideally, ask the post office to hold your mail, but if you don’t, ask your friend to collect it daily to thwart mailbox thieves.

Make Your Windows a Disguise

If you have PowerView® Automation on your window fashions, you’ll gain a great deal of security. You can set your treatments to open and close on a schedule of your choosing or based on local sunrise and sunset times, or you can control them using your smartphone from wherever you are in the world. This will make it seem like someone is still inhabiting your house, even if you’re gone. PowerView is an award-winning system that brings the best of convenience, functionality, and privacy. And not only that—PowerView has been noted in other arenas, including Interior Design’s Best of Year, Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Art and Design’s Good Design, the Window Covering Manufacturers Association’s Top Design Innovation, and Technology Integrator’s Excite Award.
